Quick facts

Duration
2 years full-time. The distance-education route runs 3 years.
Who can apply
GNM certificate + R.N., R.M. registration · 10+2 pass
Full rules

You must already be a qualified nurse. You need a certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery and registration as R.N., R.M. with your State Nurses Registration Council, together with a pass at 10+2 or an equivalent the university recognises. Anyone who did 10+1 in or before 1986 is also eligible. Married candidates are eligible. Colour blind candidates are eligible if they wear corrective contact lenses or spectacles. You must be medically fit. A male nurse trained before the integrated course must also show INC-approved training of similar length in place of midwifery, in operation theatre techniques, ophthalmic, leprosy, TB, psychiatric, neurological and neurosurgical, community health, cancer or orthopaedic nursing.

Entrance exam
None set by INC · the university or state sets the route
Full rules

None prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council. Its admission terms for this programme contain no entrance-test clause at all, where the parallel B.Sc. Nursing document sets one out in detail. Selection therefore rests with the university or the state, so we confirm the route for your destination state before you apply.

Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing is the degree for people who are already nurses. If you finished GNM, registered, and have been working, this is how you convert that into a degree without starting again.

It takes two years full-time. INC also recognises a three-year distance route, which is what most people choose when they cannot afford to stop working.

The entry requirement is your registration, not your marks. You need the GNM certificate, registration as R.N., R.M. with your State Nurses Registration Council, and a pass at 10+2 or the equivalent. INC sets no percentage bar for this course, which is unusual, and worth knowing if your Class 12 marks were the thing you were worried about.

Two details that come up often. Married candidates are eligible, stated plainly in the rules. And male nurses who trained before midwifery was integrated can substitute approved training in another area (operation theatre, psychiatric, community health and several others) rather than being shut out.

Where it leads is the honest reason to do it. The degree is what supervisory posts, teaching posts and most government promotion ladders ask for, and it is the prerequisite for M.Sc. Nursing later, and because you were already working, the year of experience INC asks for is usually behind you already.
